Educator

Performing Artist
Clinician

Widely recognized as a dynamic educator, Rob has been dedicated to his teaching career for more than 20 years.

Rob first started giving private lessons from his home in the north of England. Once he completed his Honours Degree in Jazz Studies at Leeds College of Music, he remained at the college to give individual instruction to new students. Having found the passion to share knowledge and assist other players in their development, Rob became an in house teacher at the Northern Drum Center in Bradford in the north of England where he maintained a full roster of upcoming students alongside Bradford teacher Tony Riley. As well as this, Rob augmented his teaching schedule by travelling extensively during the week to give private study to individual students at their home.

In the year 2000, Rob started giving private tuition in Marseille, France where he also taught intermittently at the Ecole de Musique et de Danse Louis Grobet.

Recognizing the need for a purpose built teaching environment in Marseille, Rob created his own modest teaching studio in the center of the town. Being heavily influenced by the teaching concepts of global drum educator Dom Famularo, Rob designed the studio based on the same concepts as Dom’s Wizdom Drumshed teaching facility in New York, and started giving individual lessons to a rapidly growing number of students in the Marseille area. Creating a French association under the name “Drumworks”, Rob developed a community of upcoming students of all ages that took regular lessons and participated in educational drum events to help them improve their playing, reach their goals, and perform live to enthusiastic audiences.

In 2006 Rob relocated the teaching studio to a more modern location on the east side of Marseille where he endeavored to develop the quality of the studio’s equipment to offer a higher standard of instruction to his students.

In 2007, Rob started working with Dom Famularo in New York to enhance further the quality of the teaching process as well as to improve Rob’s studio facility and in March 2008, the studio was officially baptized as the Wizdom Drumshed in Marseille in partnership with Dom. The Wizdom Drumshed network includes the not only the studio in Marseille, but a facility in Quebec with Stephane Chamberland, in Washington with Garey Williams as well as Dom’s original studio in Long Island New York, to provide the highest standard of drum education throughout the world.

Converting his teaching operation into a personal business, Rob currently maintains an extensive teaching schedule at the Drumshed, coaching drummers both in the region and from further afield with his abilities to motivate and facilitate the development of aspiring students.

He also continues to develop the association Drumworks that organizes masterclasses and clinics with professional drummers on a regular basis, helping to inspire a further generation of upcoming players.

"I am so inspired when I meet someone who is so dedicated to performing and teaching! Rob Hirons has been working with me on both areas! As a player, he is constantly challenging himself to grow and create. As an educator, he is always willing to seek out new ideas for assisting students to reach a higher level of expression! This is totally empowering!
Rob and I are working together to raise the excited about what Rob offers to everyone who enters his Wizdom Drumshed!

"As well as being talented, Rob has an essential quality - the passion to transmit knowledge. It is rare to find someone who will go so far to help you understand something perfectly, to find that critical point that makes everything become clear. As well as this, Rob’s analysis of movement and hand position is particularly advanced, allowing him to explain in depth the techniques required to master the drum set."

“Organizing the lessons was very easy and effective. In the time I was there we covered a lot of useful techniques which will keep me busy for a very long time.
The set-up is great. I now have a DVD with the most important parts of the lessons which I can refer to if I need to look back at something. It was money very well spent.”
